ONCE UPON THE TIME ...

there once lived a king who had an apple tree. One golden apple grew on it every day, but it was always gone come morning. The king asked his eldest son to guard the apple. But the son fell asleep and claimed that it had disappeared on its own. His second son wasn’t any better. But the youngest prince stayed awake and saw a huge golden bird tearing the apple. Prince shot it with a crossbow and got single golden feather from it. The king wondered at the radiant feather and put it in his largest hall. But now he longed for the Firebird. Each of his sons set out to look for it in a different corner of the world. The youngest son met Foxy Fox in the woods. "Give me something to eat!" she begged, so he tossed her a piece of lard. "You helped me, so I will show you where to find the Firebird," she promised. And she led him far far away to the copper castle where the Firebird lived. She told him to put it in a wooden cage. But the prince put it in a gold cage instead. The Firebird woke up and squawked so loud he summoned the guards, who brought the prince before the king. The prince begged the king for the Firebird. King agreed, if the prince brings him the horse Goldmane instead. Outside, the fox was angry that he didn’t listen to her, but she still took him to the silver castle where they kept Goldmane. She told him to put on it a leather bridle. But the prince used a gold bridle. The Goldmane rose to its feet and neighted so loud that it summoned the guards with the king. The king promised him the horse if he brings him the maiden Goldilocks from the golden castle. The fox led him to it again. "The queen of the castle has three daughters, ask her for the most plainly dressed one," she advised him. This time the prince obeyed her, and the queen had to give her to him. They fell in love at the first sight. The prince did not want to lose the beautiful girl, so Foxy Fox helped him and got not only Goldilocks for him, but also the Goldmane and the Firebird from the silver and copper king! In the evening they all fell asleep at the crossroads where the prince said goodbye to his brothers. But they came back at night and robbed and killed their brother out of jealousy. But they overlooked the fox and she helped the prince once again. She got water of life and revived the prince. He returned to his father and revealed the evil deeds of his brothers. The king banished them and gave half of the kingdom to his youngest son, as well as Goldilocks to be his wife.

IVA BERANOVA, AUTHOR OF THE ILLUSTRATION

IVA ABOUT HERSELF

"Currently I live and work in Berlin, but I am originally from Moravia where I studied graphics in Uherské Hradiště and animation in Zlín at TBU.While studying I however realized that animation is not for me. I do however collaborate on various animated spots, but only by drawing characters and concept art. I focus primarily on illustration, my work can regularly be seen, for example, in the magazine Ben Já Mína by Czech Scouting. I like to work with crayons and watercolors, unfortunately these techniques are playing second fiddle to digital drawing lately. The Silky Gang project immediately drew me in, partly because of the interesting combination of illustrations of classical fairy tales and silk, and also because the authors of the drawings were quite famous from the time of my studies in Zlín. For the motif of the Illustration of the Firebird, Martina and I chose to look into the tree crowns, where branches and leaves spiral from the central golden apple and where four Firebirds have their nests. The drawing has a lot of details, leaves, flowers and small apples. I am fortunately used to densely filling the paper with drawing, so I quite enjoyed the work. But what I liked the most was layering of all the golden feathers, intertwining and twisting between the branches. It was definitely interesting to think of the picture a little differently compared to my regular work. I am excited I got this experience and I appreciate what a tremendous collective of authors I became a part of."

MARTINA ABOUT IVA

"I stumbled upon Ivy's illustrations on Instagram. I was immediately fascinated by her graphic art abbreviation, simple silhouettes and clearly legible author's style. The Firebird was one of the other stories I wanted to have in the Silky Gang scarves portfolio. I was glad that the topic was interesting for Iva as well. I chose the color palette in mystical shades of purple, which is complemented by energetic orange and soft pink. The whole collaboration with Iva was very pleasant and professional, and the printing of the motif on silk further supported the whole beauty of her illustration. I am very glad that Iva also became the author, who is one of those who also work in the Silky Gang-SGSQ brand, which focuses on the custom creation of silk scarves. It's great to have such a talented author on the team."
