ONCE UPON THE TIME ...

There once were grandma and grandpa and they had little Budulínek. Once, before they left the house, grandma said to him, "Be nice, Budulínek, go play and don't open up to anyone! I cooked you some peas and put them in the oven. "Budulínek played all day and when he was hungry, he opened the oven and started eating. Suddenly, a red fox came and begged: "Budulínek, give me some peas, I'll give you a ride on my tail." Budulínek didn't want to do it, but she kept begging him until he agreed. The fox ate the peas, let Budulínek sit on her tail and rode with him along the bench, around the room, then ran with him to the road, from the road to the fields, from the fields to the forest and there to the fox den! Grandma and grandpa returned home, but Budulínek was nowhere to be found. They searched for him in vain. Grandma cried and moaned and grandpa couldn't stand it no more. He took his violin, gave grandma a drum and they went to look for Budulínek. They reached the forest and saw a fox den. A child's cry rolled out of it! They both started playing and singing a song: "We have a violin and a nice drum, there are three foxes and our Budulínek." The old fox was angry, so she told the young fox, "Go and tell them to stop playing, I have a headache!" Young fox looked outside, grandpa grabbed her and put her in a sack. And so they played and sang, "We have a violin and a nice drum, there are two foxes and our Budulínek." Old fox sent outside second fox, but grandpa grabbed her again. And when they started playing for the third time, old red fox decided to go see for herself why none of her children came back. She stuck her head out of the den, grandpa shoved her into the sack, tied it up and pulled Budulínek out. He cried and promised his grandparents that he would never open doors to anyone anymore. Grandpa and grandma were so happy they have their Budulínek back that they forgave him. Grandpa gave foxes a nice lesson, but then he let them go. And they all lived happily ever after.

Based on a fairy tale by Božena Němcová

KATEŘINA COUFALOVA, AUTHOR OF THE ILLUSTRATION

KATEŘINA ABOUT HERSELF

"I was always drawn to art, and especially to illustration. I studied illustration and graphic design in Brno and animation in Ostrava. I currently work as freelance illustrator and animator, I did commissions for the National Museum in Prague, for example. In 2020, I participated in the festival of contemporary illustration Lustr, in which I won the Best Illustrator of the Year award. I prefer to work with watercolor, which is my hallmark. I have known the Silky Gang brand for some time, so I didn't hesitate for a moment when I had the opportunity to design my own scarf. Martina and I found out we have a lot in common after our first meeting and slowly but surely Budulínek began to emerge, a scarf full of needles, leaves and forest mushrooms. I painted all the individual components by hand with watercolor. I love this art technique and I am glad that I was able to use it. I made a lot of different twigs, mushrooms and rowanberries for Budulínek's design. Martina and I chose the best ones that we used in the final composition. The selection was quite rigorous. We paid attention to morphology, texture and color to match the individual elements and at the same time create a contrast. The scarf utilizes shades of purple, red and fresh blue with soft yellow for contrast. The centerpiece, a fox with Budulínek, is surrounded by a swirl of mushrooms, needles, toadstools and a couple of squirrels, rummaging through the twigs. On opposite ends fallen autumn leaves appear. The smaller scarf that complements this collection has similar motifs to the large one. On it you may find, in addition, violins and drums, which play an important role in the story of Budulínek. Designing a scarf for the Silky Gang was a very valuable experience for me and I am grateful for the opportunity to create illustrations in a different way and in a different format."

MARTINA ABOUT KATEŘINA

"In Katka's art style, I like her typical and brilliantly mastered watercolor illustration. When I thought about what story would be ideal for Kateřina to stand out with the lightness with which she creates her watercolors, I was inspired by her illustration of an autumn forest, full of mushrooms, twigs and fallen leaves. The classic story About Budulínek by Božena Němcová was an ideal motif, where all these motifs could be fully developed, as well as her style of illustration. The collaboration was really close this time, because Katka drew all the individual elements and I then composed them leaf by leaf, mushroom after mushroom, twig after twig into the final scarf pattern. I have a particularly personal relationship to this illustration. "
