ONCE UPON THE TIME ...

There was a poor fisherman who lived with his wife in a small cottage. One day, he threw his net in the water and waited until noon, when a golden fish glittered in the net. The fisherman pulled it out and the fish said to him, „Hello, fisherman, I am the golden fish. If you let me go, I will fulfill you three wishes.“ The fisherman agreed to return her to the water. At home he told the woman what had happened to him. „You fool!“ she scolded him. “You have three wishes. Go back and tell her you want a new washtub. "The fisherman returned and called, „Fish, where are you?“ A golden head emerged from the water. „What do you want, fisherman?“ she asked. „My wife wants new washtub,“ he told her.„You were kind to me, fisherman. Go home, you will find your washtub there.“The fisherman thanked her and went back. But his wife wasn’t satisfied. She told him to go back and wish for a large house. He called the fish and told her the woman's wish. „All right,“ she agreed. „I will fulfill this wish.“ The fisherman returned to his wife and saw the new roof of his new big house from far away. But the woman frowned at him. „Pretty house, yes! But I want a palace! And beautiful dresses! And gold and gems! "The hapless fisherman had to go to fish again. In the meantime, however, it got darker, wind started howling and the water raged. „Don't be mad, fish, but my wife now wants a palace. And beautiful dresses! And gold and gems!“ „I'll bring that to you,“ said the fish and swam away. The fisherman returned and found a huge palace. In it stood the fisherman's wife, dressed in beautiful clothes and decorated with jewelry. „Run to the fish and tell her I want to be a queen!“ „She will be angry, she has already fulfilled three wishes. Don't send me to her!“ But it was to no avail. A storm broke out. The fisherman calledv out for the golden fish, until she raised her head above the water. „My wife wants to be a queen,“ he said. The fish frowned and disappeared. The fisherman waited, but when nothing happened, he came back. There he found no palace, jewelry or washtub, just an old little cottage and his wife, wailing. „Don't cry, woman,“ he said. „You wanted more and more and now you have nothing.“ The fisherman was happy to have his cottage, at least. He soon went out to sea, but he never met the golden fish again.

GABRIELA PLAČKOVÁ, AUTHOR OF THE ILLUSTRATION

GABRIELA ABOUT HERSELF

„I studied animation at Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín. I work in animation, stopmotion and 2D animation, I love cats and eating loads of hummus daily. I also contribute to children’s magazines, I make book illustrations, animate advertisements and I work on my own animation projects in the time I have left. I especially like colorful, spatial illustrations in modern style, that’s how I chose to approach my design for „The Golden Fish“ fairytale as well. I put my passion for animation in my graduate film „The Incredible Wardrobegadget of Dr. Stein“, which I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to showcase at more than 35 international film festivals all over the world, from Argentina to Japan.

MARTINA ABOUT GABRIELA

Gabriela is such an illustrative chameleon for me. She does not have one clear style, she can swim brilliantly between different concepts. But the way she elaborated the motif of the fairy tale The Goldfish, I think it characterizes her most. She took her illustration truly conscientiously. Not one fish or gem on the scarf is exactly the same. And why are there two fishes in the center of the fish motif? It is the symbolism of the goldfish bifurcation that seeks to satisfy the fisherman and his demanding wife. This is also the reason why the whole composition puts a fisherman, swimming in a flood of fish, againts his wife, who swims among the gems. The color concept of shades from turquoise to bright orange evokes a colorful sea landscape.
