The Devil and Kate

Once upon a time, there was a village girl called Kate. She was known throughout the village for her quarrelsome nature, fiery temper, and constant bossiness. On top of that, she had a flood of freckles, a large nose, and floppy ears—people avoided her, and no young man would ask for her hand in marriage, nor did anyone want to dance with her."I would love to dance so much that I would even go with the devil," Kate once grumbled at a village party. Suddenly, an unknown man in a hunter's vest appeared from nowhere – he was tall, handsome and had a honeyed voice. They danced together almost until dawn, and the stranger promised the girl that she would live like a princess with him. She had no idea that he was a Devil who had come to earth to kidnap a rich noblewoman from a nearby castle. But at the dance, he mistook her for Kate, and when she agreed to go with him, he rejoiced and didn't even check to see if he had grabbed the right woman.Kate jumped on his back so he would carry her away, and she held on so tightly that even with his devilish strength, he couldn't shake her off. She did not like Hell and so she cursed and demanded to be returned. There was such a commotion among Devils that even the greatest sinners looked innocent. All the other Devils began to regret the day they let Kate cross the threshold, and rather than suffer her, Devil took her back to earth.Devil went and met a shepherd with his flock. Because Kate was clinging to him like a leech and didn't seem to be letting him go, he promised the shepherd a bag of gold if he helped him get rid of her. The shepherd arranged with the musicians to play like they never played before, and Kate was so carried away by the music that she started dancing and didn't even notice that she was no longer on Devil's back, but in the shepherd's embrace. Hell breathed a sigh of relief, the shepherd got his gold, Devil finally found the evil noblewoman, who got her deserved punishment in Hell, and Kate had more fun than ever before in her life.

founder and designer of the brand Silky Gang

I consider Czech folk patterns to be among the most beautiful in the world. I definitely wanted to include them among the Silky Gang scarf motifs, but at the same time avoid imitating and copying what had already been done. I based the design of the collection on a classic Czech fairytale. At the same time, I found it to be fresh and contemporary in a certain way. I conceived the pattern as a table with a checkered tablecloth on which plates of various sizes are laid out. Some feature motifs from the story, while others feature pies or apples. I approached author Veronika Zacharová to collaborate on the project. She has a wonderful gift for simplifying artistic motifs to their very essence while keeping the illustrations fun and distinctive. I think the result turned out perfectly, and with a bonus, because this collection is the first ever Silky Gang porcelain plate set featuring motifs from the scarves. I think porcelain and silk complement each other beautifully. This gives us and other artists the opportunity to transfer Silky Gang scarf motifs to another noble and luxurious material.

For the Devil and Kate motif, Martina, as always, had a strong vision in mind from the outset—an irregular composition of dinner plates of various sizes depicting scenes from the original story. It was then up to me to determine the artistic direction, for which I was given complete freedom. However, it was already clear from previous consultations that we were thinking along the same lines. Few people fail to remember the fairytale film Playing with the Devil, for which Josef Lada created its‘ brilliant artwork. I borrowed the strong basic colors and minimalist shapes from the movie. Together with the clean graphic design, this was a way for me to avoid literally copying existing folklore motifs and flourishes. Once the artistic concept had been defined and agreed upon, there were no more hiccups, and it was probably the most silky smooth work process I have ever done. We decided to completely omit the predictable motif of Hell and other literal references and focused on ensuring that the scarf primarily fulfilled an aesthetic function. Thus, on the plate, we see only the main couple in a whirl of dance (the Devil is, of course, disguised as a handsome stranger) and the Princess, around whom folkloric scenery swirls freely. Also worth mentioning is the timeless checker pattern, which is making a big comeback and is key to the collection. In short, if it's a tablecloth, it has to be checkered!

SCARF PLATES MATERIAL AND PACKAGING

The author's design is printed on 100% organic silk twill with hnad-rolled hem.

The scarves are stored in handmade boxes. The package also includes certificates with a fairy tale and an original string with a pearl button. This is used to tie the scarves and arrange them on clothing. Scarves made of 100% organic silk have a unique serial number of the print in their certificates. They are produced in limited series - only 200 pieces 90x90 cm and 200 pieces in the size 124x6 cm. The collection is also printed on cotton with silk. The entire collection is complemented by hand-sewn beaded brooches. The prints on porcelain plates for this collection are made using the demanding screen printing method. A total of 9 colored screens were used for this motif. The result is a luxurious plate on which you can enjoy your dessert, but you can also hang it on the wall as an artistic object.
