CETONIA ET TULIPA

Goldenrod and tulip

"

In place where light of day / Touches the tips of the leaves / We shall meet again there / Once more seeking same peace

Shudder of wings or petals / Drop of a rainbow shines gold / I am you and you are me / Bond like no other takes hold

I feel a maiden of defiance / I'm born from lumps of mere dirt / No love in land for my kind / My beauty mere source of hurt

Tulipa snatches the sun / Reaching for its raw light / And world breathes its‘ first breath / Despite its‘ unsightly spite

Cetonia looks to the roots / Gold of the highest worth / Colors born from the hollow / So simply linked to the earth

You are mine and I am yours / Nothing can hope us to sever / Do you love? I love / Because true love is forever

And after the death of winter / New life shows its‘ endeavor / Then we'll meet again, my dear / Forever or maybe never

verses Jakub Chodil

Immerse yourself in a landscape full of rich tulip flowers and goldenrods, which in the new Silky Gang brand collection will transport you like a wave of a magic wand to the baroque world of fashion and artistic icons, Marquise Marguerite de la Sabliére, French Queen Marie Antoinette or Jean La Fontaine. In the Cetonia et Tulipa collection, you will not only find luxurious silk scarves in several sizes, but also embroidered velvet handbags and gold-headed beetle brooches in larger than life size.

The scarf motif is dominated by tulips, complemented by golden beetles. On vembroidered velvet handbags you will discover goldheads in simplified graphics. Preciosa and TOHO's handmade bug brooches are reminiscent of precious stone jewelry,

with which the nobility adorned themselves in the Baroque period.

AUTHORS OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS

MARTINA KARAFIÁTOVÁ

founder of the brand Silky Gang

While designing the Cetonia et Tulipa (Chafer and Tulip) collection, I was inspired by the opulence of Baroque floral still lifes, illustrations from herbariums and old prints. The main motif of the scarf collection is tulips in full bloom or just before bloom. The whole pattern is then enlivened by chafer beetles. I aimed to evoke a feeling of intoxication in the viewer and the wearer with the beauty of the flowers in contrast to the excess of the beetles. New to this collection are the accessories that supplement the scarf illustration. Firstly, there are embroidered velvet handbags dominated by chafers in simplistic graphics and then 3D sculptural, larger-than-life bug brooches. These are created from rocaille beads by brands Preciosa and TOHO combined with metal details gilded in 24 carat gold. The production of each brooch represents about 40 hours of meticulous handwork.  In this collection, the beetle becomes an aesthetic object worthy of admiration and, together with the handbags and silk scarves, forms a perfect and balanced ensemble. The heroine of the Cetonia et Tulipa photographic campaign is a woman inspired in part by the character of Marguerite de la Sablèire, patroness and supporter of the poet and writer Jean de La Fontaine. I imagine her as a for her time modern, artistic woman, interested in botany and natural history, who holds a deep and warm friendship with La Fontaine. The other female inspiration is the somewhat dissolute and capricious figure of Marie Antoinette, exactly as portrayed in the film of the same name by director Sofia Coppola. This collection was one of the most challenging I've worked on so far for Silky Gang. Only thanks to the talent of illustrator Katka Coufalová and the new reinforcements in the team, Magda Veverková, who worked on the embroidery and Monika Fárová, who materialized my vision of the brooches, could a whole that matches my ideas and visions be created. I mustn't forget the photographer Martin Suchánek, who is behind the visuals of the whole collection. He managed to capture my artistic vision perfectly with the eye of his camera. The Silky Gang collections are always the result of the work of the whole team and I am extremely pleased when the end result matches the effort that each of us put into it.

KATEŘINA COUFALOVÁ - illustrator

I'm glad I went back to flowers while working on the new collection for Silky Gang. This time it was tulips, which Martina wanted to portray in a baroque style. I combined watercolour and gouache painting with pen and ink on the largest scarf. The flowers are intertwined with each other, their black and white silhouettes and white background make the colourful versions of the tulips stand out. The scarf-like composition is then complemented only by chafers, a few ladybugs and hummingbirds. The whole motif is rounded off by a fine contrasting line on the edge. In other, smaller patterns, the tulips and beetles gradually get closer and we can observe the combination of insects and plants up close, as if under a magnifying glass. The whole illustration involved hours of careful work with pencil, brush and pen, and then I pieced the components together on the computer. All the scarves are designed to work on their own, but can also be combined with each other and layer patterns over each other.

MAGDA VEVERKOVÁ - illustrator, embroidery of Cetonia et Tulipa handbags

Leaving aside the creating from a young age, the always present crayons and notebook I carried around in my pockets, I started my art education in the studio of promotional graphics in Ostrava, followed by graphic design at FaVU in Brno with an interesting internship in painting in Winchester, England. After my studies I worked as an assistant in illustration at the Faculty of Art and Design in Pilsen. Working with illustration has become a domain for me in my own work or in the form of collaboration with various art projects (e.g. large-scale illustrations for the NFZZ Foundation, wallpaper collections for Vavex, etc.) I enjoy its overlap, even in places where it is unusual. For example, in conjunction with applied art. Perhaps because my roots are in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, I admire the craft and its connection with art. Collaborating on the Cetonia et Tulipa collection for Silky Gang is for me a symbol of exactly that. Perfect craftsmanship and great artwork. I enjoy Martina‘s enthusiasm and her joy in inventing and finding ways to achieve the best possible result. Very likeable ideas and the use of beautiful materials for „that“ that seems to have been created so easily and effortlessly in the end! From the beginning, to the last detail. There is so much amazing work behind it! My job was to work on her art of beetles for a handbag collection. I searched and tried for a long time to find the right style of embroidery that would elevate the freshness of the illustrations created for the Cetonia et Tulipa collection on colored velvet, while not detracting from them. I used the embroidery machine as the perfect intermediary to „be persuaded“ and in the end, with the help of the satin stitch, it perfectly managed to transfer the idea into the final form. This resulted in colourful variations of embroidery for Silky Gang handbags that concur with silk scarves and beaded brooches.
