PINOCCHIO

Once upon a time there was a carver named Geppetto. He was lonely, so he made a puppet out of wood. He named it Pinocchio. That night, a magical fairy flew in, waved her wand and gave him life. "I'm alive," he breathed happily. "If you prove you are sincere, you will become a real boy," she told him and disappeared.Geppetto could not believe his eyes. Pinocchio talked and walked! Soon he wanted to go to school. Father bought him books and sent him off to learn. But Pinocchio came across a circus and wanted to go in. He gave the man at the entrance his books instead of money and entered the tent. There, wooden figures danced and Pinocchio joined them. The owner of the circus saw that a puppet without strings could make him a lot of money and locked Pinocchio in a cage. He cried until the fairy appeared. "How did you get here?" she demanded. "I was robbed, brought here and locked up!" Pinocchio told her, but his nose began to grow. The fairy made him tell the truth. Pinocchio admitted that it was all his fault, and his nose shrunk. The fairy waved her wand, the cage door flew open, and Pinocchio found himself holding brand new books. He continued on to school, but an evil coachman offered him a ride. He told him about a nice place where he would be better off than at school. He took him to a magical island full of sweets and friends. Before he knew it, a week had passed. But then he noticed that his ears and fur began to grow. He was turning into a donkey! He quickly ran away. He reached the shore and jumped into the sea. Suddenly, a huge mouth opened under him and swallowed him! Pinocchio found himself in the belly of the whale, where, to his great surprise, he saw his poor father. "Dad!" he rushed towards him. The old man set out to find Pinocchio after he had not returned home, but while paddling through the sea he came across the whale. "Where have you been?" he asked. Pinocchio remembered how his nose grew when he lied and confessed everything. Pinocchio thought to make a fire, which made the whale sneeze and shoot them ashore. There the fairy reappeared. "You've proved you're sincere," she said to the puppet, turning it into a real boy. They lived happily ever after.

AUTHORS OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS

MARTINA KARAFIÁTOVÁ

founder of the brand Silky Gang

I've been thinking about the design of Pinocchio scarf for quite a while. And it took some time to get to the final result as well.I chose the scarf composition to resemble a view into a circus tent, where around the edges  among the running horses you can see the figure of Pinocchio gradually transforming from wooden puppet into a living boy. In the middle there is a typical circus scene – figures of acrobats and animals. For the colour scheme of the pattern I chose shades ranging from classic blue, red and white to chocolate brown and cream with accents of vanilla yellow. I first approached illustrator Eliška Chytková, who had already created the Little Red Riding Hood collection for Silky Gang, to collaborate on Pinocchio. We agreed on a style that resembles the circus setting of the Baroque period and the 18th century. Eliška had already created quite elaborate sketches when she had to withdraw from the collaboration due to maternal duties. Illustrator Kateřina Coufalová, who is one of the stalwarts of our brand, continued on with her work. Katka elaborated on Eliska's motifs, added her own ideas and aesthetics, and in the end, the pattern was exactly what I dreamed of. Playful, cute and variable when worn.

I started my work on the Pinocchio scarf pattern a little unconventionally, in the middle of the process. The composition and colours were already decided and my job was to draw these elements and give them a final look. The chosen technique was also unconventional for me, I normally use paper, while the illustrations here are completely digital. However, this allowed me to focus on the chosen style of the illustrations and to make the whole scarf composition into its‘ best possible version.

Kateřina illustrated for Silky Gang collection Budulinek, Secret Garden

and Cetonia et Tulipa as well.
